Preparing the kitchen floor for vinyl tiles

We are using 18" X 18" vinyl tile from Lowe's for the kitchen. It takes a bit of prep work. Larry installed a 1/4" plywood underlayment, and we spackled and sanded over the screwholes so it's nice and smooth. YES! Those are the IKEA kitchen cabinets taking shape - the "Adel" face style in "medium brown".

BELOW: Next step is to apply a primer with a paint roller. It's really weird stuff - a thin, sticky milky paint. Took a while to dry!

BELOW: Next step is to plop yourself down on the floor, peel the paper off the back of each tile, dust the target area carefully, align the tile edges carefully, and stick it down to the floor. DONE!

It really turned out cool! The mixed slate-like colors harmonize with both the warm cabinets and the cooler stainless steel that will be a factor when we roll the appliances in. I like the bigger tile size at 18" X 18", it has more impact than foot-square tiles, I think.

This tile is indestructible and it's so easy to clean. I highly recommend the stuff. It comes in a rainbow of colors and textures. Much more kitchen news coming soon!!
